On the 20 and 21 August 2009, the jury met to advise on the prize of the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2010. Out of more than 1,200 nominated entries the jury selected 5 gold and 18 silver winners in the categorie product design and 5 gold and 17 silver winners in communication design. Herewith the winners receive the most valuable competitive differentiator in the design area.

A company can only enter the competition for the Design Award if its product has already been awarded with a national or international design prize. A company can’t apply for the Design Award, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology nominates it.

No other Design Award sets its entrants such a strict criterion. Because of this it is known as the “Prize of Prizes".

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology presented the Design Award at the opening of „Ambiente“ - International Frankfurt Fair on 12 February 2010. With over 1,000 participants from politics, business and media, the award ceremony is one of the most important design events of the year.

Statement of the Jury

“Nature means life, means multiplication, means growth. Summing up all of this in one sign that can also grow into a magnificent tree as a super-sign is a remarkable design achievement. There is much more to be discovered in this logo. The annual rings in a tree trunk, for example, or perhaps the structure of a circuit diagram, as simulated by genetics. And how wonderful that this sign, despite all its logic, still looks pleasantly improvised and thus “natural” because of its irregular lines and radii. Perhaps this is the appropriate place to say that signs of this kind traditionally run into difficulties with clients, who usually like only something symmetrical and familiar. —――――――――― It’s good that an unconventional shape has made it here for once”.
